If you’re a parent, chances are the people in your generation didn’t even consider braces until they were already into their teenage years, but times are changing, and so are braces and orthodontic treatment. So when exactly should your child come into our Wheaton orthodontic office for his or her first evaluation? That’s an excellent question, and here’s the answer, courtesy of our top-rated orthodontist in Wheaton, IL, Dr. Allen:
The Expert Recommendation
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic evaluation right around the age of 7. While it’s unlikely your son or daughter would actually get braces at such a young age, the fact that your child’s first set of adult molars have likely appeared by then gives your Wheaton, IL orthodontist an idea of how the overall bite will start to develop.
Phase One Treatment
If your orthodontist in Wheaton, IL does happen to spot an issue at this first consultation, your child might receive what’s referred to as “phase one treatment.” Orthodontic care at this age is usually focused on correcting any issues such as overcrowding that might prevent the rest of the child’s adult teeth from growing in properly. It’s a chance to get ahead of the game, so to speak, and avoid bigger problems later on.
The Need for Regular Reevaluation
Children who are given the “all clear” during their first visit to our orthodontic office will be encouraged to come back for follow-up consultations as they grow up and their adult teeth continue to come in. We still typically start recommending traditional orthodontic treatment – or innovative alternatives such as Invisalign – between the ages of 11 and 14.
